i just wrote a long and thoughtful blog about the difference between public and private writing, and then blogger.com ate it.

yuck.

did you know that john steinbeck lost the manuscript to “the pearl” right after he finished it?

after a long search and (i’m guessing) a long string of profanities, he decided to write the whole thing again.

years later, they found the original (i don’t know where). when they compared it to the published version, only six words were different. in the entire book (over 100 pages).

that is genius.
